Jan 13: Akron/Family

Club Downunder is pleased to announce the return of experimental folk auteurs Akron/Family to Florida State University. Formed in 2002, the band flourished in the burgeoning Williamsburg experimental folk and psychedelic rock scenes, combining a wide array of sounds to craft a truly unique voice. The band is equally comfortable exploring the possibilities of lush folk sounds and dancy electronica. Aesthetically borrowing from the cryptic nature of cults, Akron/Family has garnered a huge and loyal fanbase unequaled in the music world. Their new album, Akron/Family II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, was released in 2011 by Dead Oceans Records and features a diverse range of instruments, including gong, trumpet and slide guitar. The album was released after being 'leaked' on the internet numerous times in varied remixed and re-recorded forms. This publicity stunt was committed not only to challenge the 'must-have' mentality of many filesharing music fans, but to also supply content for an exclusive Record Store Day 2011 LP release, entitled
Akron/Family will be accompanied on the stage with Praything and Bad Weather California. Praything, the project of lo-fi enthusiast Ju Kovacevich, is a pleasing blend of pop, folk and electronic music. Kovacevich's lilting vocals resemble Daniel Johnston's in their immediacy and honesty. Bad Weather California is a folk-rock four piece with nostalgic ties to the psych-rock sound of yesteryear with a flashy, postmodern twist.

Jan 17: Givers

Union Productions is pleased to announce that Givers with be performing at Club Downunder on Tuesday, January 17! Givers is an indie rock five piece with deep roots in their native Louisiana culture and tradition. Their high energy performances are pulled off with a number of instrument switch-ups, resulting in delightfully breezy, lucid-dream pop led by vocalists Tiffany “Teddy” Lamson and Taylor Gaurisco. They describe their music as “Afro-beat, dancey pants, indie pop love” and last June they released their debut album, In Light, which brought the climax of their much-blogged about hype, delivering on the reputation they’ve accumulated from their live shows (TIME listed Givers as one of the “Ten Acts that Rocked South by Southwest”). Infusing indie afro-beat rhythms, acoustic guitar-picking, easy-going melodies and harmonies, and the constant tempo change that rocks us back and forth, their album and live sets are full lighthearted energy and fun.
Chicago-based singer/songwriter Colin Caufield, also known as Young Man, has been the talk of the town online, first for his chillingly beautiful covers on YouTube, and then for his debut EP, Boy, a deceivingly-simple suite of songs about growing up without knowing what adulthood means or how to achieve it. From his humble lyrics and melodies to the bare bone production, clearly Caufield’s motto is “less is more”.

Jan 20: The Beauvilles

Club Downunder welcomes The Beauvilles to Club Downunder on Friday, January 20! Getting their start in the garages and underground warehouses of swampy Florida, The Beauvilles have recently become one of the Southeast’s brightest and most recognized new independent D.I.Y. touring act. As intoxicating as the first time you heard rock and roll, and led by an equally charismatic singer/guitarist, this band often evokes comparisons to the past icons of 70s rock, while still finding inspiration in new experimental pop, psychedelic and Americana genres. Lead singer/guitarist Shawn Kyle sets the mood for the rest of the band with his impassioned and unpredictable live performances, which range from breaking instruments, bouts of improvisation, and general acts of performance art, which he credits to his upbringing in a southern Pentecostal Church that encouraged speaking in tongues and becoming possessed by spirits. With two EPs released, and a third one on the way, The Beauvilles are in fact a living vestige of American rock and roll music.

Jan. 23: The Mountain Goats

Union Productions is pleased to announce the return of The Mountain Goats to the stage at Club Downunder on Monday, January 23rd.The indie-folk project of mastermind John Darnielle, the group has served as a vehicle for his personal form of lilting, personal guitar work. Throughout the 90s, Darnielle released unapologetically lo-fi cassette and 7'' recordings. It wasn't until 2002 that Darnielle signed a record deal with label 4AD and recorded the album "Tallahassee" with a full band as backup. The album is a concept album about a unhappily married couple living together in the Florida capital city. Currently, The Mountain Goats project is signed to Merge Records, and released the album "All Eternals Deck," a concept album about a deck of Tarot cards, in 2011.
The Mountain Goats will be joined on the stage by Nurses, an art/pop outfit from California. Their staccato guitars, emotional vocal delivery, and stuttering piano form an engaging and innovative sound.
